48 Kids, 5 States, One Very Confused Map: The Great School Bus Board Census

Here at Surf City HQ, we ask the hard-hitting questions nobody else will touch. Like: why does a seventh grader in Ohio swear by a board that half his classmates consider a personal insult?

We polled roughly 48 self-identified Subway Surfers superfans across five states — Georgia, Ohio, Texas, Washington, and New Jersey — mostly via the most rigorous research method known to science: eavesdropping-adjacent school bus conversations and a handful of very enthusiastic group chats. The results? Chaotic. Beautiful. Deeply regional in ways we cannot explain.

The Map Nobody Asked For

If we drew this up as a graphic, it would look like a weather map for a storm system made of pure vibes:

The Bus Stop Debates Are Real

The best part of this whole exercise wasn't the data. It was the passion. One fifth grader in Atlanta delivered a two-minute closing argument in favor of the Lowrider that had better structure than most TED Talks. A kid in Newark called the Starboard "mid" and immediately got roasted by three separate people. Democracy in action.

Why Regions Pick What They Pick

We have theories. Are they good theories? Absolutely not. But here they are:

  1. Peer pressure is a weather system. One influential kid picks a board, and six weeks later it's regional law.
  2. Aesthetic loyalty beats stats. Nobody we talked to mentioned multipliers. Not one. It's all about how the board feels when it pops out.
  3. Older siblings are kingmakers. Several kids cited a brother, sister, or neighbor as the source of their board allegiance. Board politics are inherited, apparently.

The Verdict

Is this scientific? No. Is it a perfect snapshot of how young American players build identity around a game about dodging trains? We think so. The lesson: your favorite board says less about your skills and more about your zip code — and honestly, that's kind of beautiful.

Got a different board situation in your state? Yell at us in the comments. We're already planning the sequel survey.
